A new radio station for South West London

A new radio station for South West London

Award winning Wandsworth Radio is expanding to serve the neighbouring London boroughs of Richmond, Merton and Lambeth and is hoping to be heard on DAB digital radio very soon.

The re-branded Riverside Radio will launch with an outside broadcast from the famous Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race in Putney on Sunday 7th April 2019.

Riverside Radio Managing Director Jason Rosam said “We are so excited to be expanding our local radio service to the surrounding boroughs of Richmond, Merton and Lambeth.

We chose the name Riverside Radio as both the river Thames and Wandle connect the four boroughs together. Riverside Radio aims to be your friend who loves a gossip, lets you know what’s happening, where to go and what to do, while sharing some uplifting music.

We know we live in the best part of London and are thrilled to be creating a new radio station covering local news, culture and promoting talented local people. Listen and you’ll Switch on South West London.

At the end of last year Wandsworth Radio won the Digital Radio Station of the Year at the national Community Radio Awards and since launching in January 2015 has built a loyal audience of around 15,000 people every month.

One of the reasons for re-branding to Riverside Radio is the new developments in DAB digital radio technology.

Wandsworth Radio has only ever been available online and on radio listening apps. After receiving a huge amount of praise and support from politicians, businesses and local people they applied to Ofcom for an FM community radio licence in 2016 along with more than twenty other radio groups across London. However, Ofcom decided to hand the licence to urban music station Flex FM instead.

Riverside Radio Volunteers

Since then bosses have been focussed on getting the station onto DAB digital radio and have sent Ofcom an expression of interest to run a new small scale DAB multiplex for South West London. It will help the regulator plan the spectrum for small-scale DAB and their proposals are due to be released at some point this year.

“Smaller radio stations like ours cannot afford to broadcast on DAB currently as its set up on a wider, regional basis.” said Mr Rosam…
“We are waiting for secondary legislation on Small Scale DAB to go through Parliament and hope to be broadcasting to more people in South West London on digital radio as soon as possible.”

The new Riverside Radio will continue to provide a first rate broadcast news service, highlight local sport, arts, music and culture and offer valuable opportunities to hundreds of local people to gain skills in broadcast media such as presenting, news reading, reporting and supporting the station in technical, admin or other roles.

Director and Arts Editor Lesley Strachan who has been at the station before it launched on air four years ago said “It’s been wonderful to showcase and promote arts and sports events as part of our local news coverage. In recent years, we have been regularly asked to cover events outside of our borough, which we’ve had to decline. The re-branded Riverside Radio, widens our remit to include our neighbouring boroughs. Our volunteer reporters now have tremendous opportunities to cover an even greater range of news stories, arts, culture and sporting events.”

Everyone at the radio station attends a new volunteers open day, held at the Battersea based studios and Riverside Radio would love to welcome more people from Richmond, Merton and Lambeth to apply for volunteer opportunities.

Head of Volunteers Mike Stead said “Our volunteers are what makes the station tick. They come from very diverse backgrounds. We have young and old, those who are new to radio, together with experienced presenters, journalists and technical staff.

Many have used the station as a springboard to a career in professional broadcasting both in the UK and overseas. What unites us is an infectious sense of fun and an enthusiasm to serve our listeners with quality radio.”

Like Wandsworth Radio, Riverside will be funded by a mix of advertising, sponsorship and fundraising efforts. Many local businesses in Wandsworth have worked with the station to promote their message to a loyal local audience.

Head of Advertising and Sales Martin Adams said “From on air ads and show sponsorship to competitions and targeted interviews this level of exposure is often out of reach for many businesses, but we are proud to offer the most flexible, affordable and exciting way for ambitious local companies to really engage with the area.

Our evolution to Riverside Radio will significantly grow our listenership and offer even greater value for money – I am really looking forward to extending our advertising opportunities to a greater pool of London’s business community”

The new station launches at the Boat Race on Sunday April 7th with an outside broadcast on the Riverside Radio stage at St Mary’s Churchyard next to Putney Bridge. There’ll be live music and other entertainment, a chance to meet Riverside Radio presenters and to find out more about the station.

Head of Marketing and Events Craig McAulay said “We are proud to have been at the heart of so many local events in Wandsworth over the years including: turning on Christmas lights, running street festivals and hosting the annual Boat Race that starts in our borough.

The expansion of Riverside Radio now brings an exciting opportunity to take this expertise in promoting, presenting and staging events to new areas. We plan to create the same buzz and community atmosphere that has made our big events so successful and we look forward to giving even more local musicians a platform to perform for our crowds on the big outdoor stage!”
